Careful choices

Sustainability has come to the forefront of human awareness over the last decade and in recent years it has become one of the most essential developments in office space.

Today, business success is measured against the three tiers of people, planet and profit and businesses examine how their operations impact on communities and the environment, and whether the changes they make and the good they do is short-lived or lasting.

Even inside the office, businesses are looking at how they use energy and water and how they treat waste. They are also making careful choices about the suppliers they choose and the materials they use.

Bicycles are replacing carbon-producing cars as a favoured mode of transport with the rise of bike cities and corporate cycleplexes. Corporate bike fleets have become commonplace in America’s Silicon Valley – Apple, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google all have bikes on their premises. Google has well over 1 000 bikes at its Mountain View campus – around one per five workers. In South Africa, Nedbank’s four-star rated Menlyn Maine green building includes a bicycle parking lot.

Energy saving can also include making maximum use of natural light rather than electric, and today’s modern green buildings are being designed around natural-light atriums. A primary preoccupation in the design of office layouts is how to make the maximum use of natural daylight – as well as the energy saving there are health benefits for employees too.

A study on the effects of natural light on building occupants by the Natural Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado, USA, reports that daylighting (using natural light for internal lighting during the day) has been associated with improved mood, enhanced morale, lower fatigue, and reduced eyestrain. It also meets an important psychological need for contact with the outside living environment.

Office waste and recycling programmes have become an everyday part of corporate and business culture – employees are recycling paper, reusing office supplies and replacing disposable items (like paper cups) with reusable ones.

As well as energy saving, waste reduction and recycling, businesses are supporting their sustainability efforts by making careful choices about the suppliers they use and considering whether those suppliers consider the environment and use local and sustainable resources.

Sustainability-aware businesses elect to use recycled and recyclable local products as far as possible – and they do this not just for everyday office supplies but for bigger office items too, like furniture.

Ukhuni’s commitment to sustainability has seen them develop four office furniture ranges made primarily from locally sourced raw materials (80 to 95%), which are locally manufactured here in South Africa. The four ranges – Skala, Simply, Evo and Freeplay – also have a 95% recyclability rating.
